Monarchy

Burnley Conservative Association believes that a Constitutional Monarchy is better for Britain than a Republic for the following reasons:

  • Britain needs an non-political head of state around whom people of all persuasions can rally.

  • It provides a tangible link with centuries of tradition

  • Royalty serve as effective ambassadors for our nation abroad

  • The monarch is an important feature of our constitution

  • The Royal Family are good value for money:

The Royal Family costs each Briton, per year, 61p.

This is compared with:

British Troops in Iraq: £28.08

Legal Aid for Divorces: £1.02

EU Common Agricultural subsidies: £63.00

Downing Street Press Office: 28p

Government Advertising Campaigns: £3.15

Welsh Assembly Administration: £2.85

Opera and Ballet Subsidies: 83p

Keeping suspended doctors on full pay: 66p

Export Subsidies to arms companies: £18.88

In 2004, the Queen undertook 436 Royal Engagements, 49 of which were abroad.

The Royal Family in total performed a total of 3,932.
