Today’s announcement that home shopping firm Shop Direct is to close its Burnley site with the loss of 450 jobs is a hammer blow not only to those who will lose their jobs but to everyone in Burnley and Pendle.
Andrew Stephenson, Prospective Conservative MP for Pendle, said, “The announcement of 450 job losses in Burnley just 48 hours after the Government was trumpeting the end of the recession shows we are not out of the woods yet. This will be a devastating blow for many workers in Pendle and Burnley at a time when there are very few vacancies around.”
Richard Ali, Prospective Conservative MP for Burnley, said, “Now is not the time for short-term partisanship. Politicians of all parties must come together to provide practical assistance to those that find themselves without employment through no fault of their own. In the longer term this appalling news emphasises that Burnley and Pendle continue to face the effects of the recession and more than ever need the change in policy that only a change in Government will bring to Get Britain Working.”
