What a relief the AV referendum was won by the NO team. A YES would have meant a permanent Lib Dem coalition with various alternating partners. If the Lib Dems want to be in government, let them produce decent policies and better people, not alter the electoral system to better advantage themselves. AM May 2011
In May this year the people of Burnley will vote on a referendum on whether or not to keep our present voting system or adopt the Alternative Voting system. First past the post which we have used for centuries and works well is a system where we have one vote per one citizen. The Alternative Voting system would mean the electorate can choose several candidates in order of preference. This would ultimately mean the Liberal Democrats would get to choose who governs and in some cases for how long. I do not believe that any political party should have such power and I think this system couldn't be any less democratic. Who really wants the Liberals, an insignificant fringe party given the choice to decided who governs. I certainly don't. Britain needs strong government. AH March 2011
